Graubünden has played a crucial role in shaping bike tourism and is internationally established as a cycling destination. Today, the canton leverages this leading position to continuously develop its offerings and integrate the growing importance of cycling into leisure and everyday life. This presents an opportunity to contribute to Graubünden's reputation as a place for a good life by cycling.

UNDERSTANDING THE BIKE BROADER

The latest project has been working since 2021. Graubünden Bike The aim is to take Graubünden's cycling infrastructure to the next level of development. Thanks to broad participation, numerous sub-projects were developed and implemented within a short time.

Graubünden Bike is aimed at all residents of Graubünden and those who would like to become residents. It thus bridges the gap between tourism and local interests. Over the course of the project, more than 200 partners have actively participated: a testament to the project's success in fostering participation.

STRUCTURE MODERATION AT GRAUBÜNDEN BIKE

From everyday life to leisure activities, from mountain bikes to city bikes: Graubünden Bike addresses a wide range of areas in over 40 sub-projects. The project is managed by Darco Cazin by ALLEGRA. ALLEGRA also conceived the project together with partners from across the canton.

The steering group, consisting of the Slow Traffic Department of the Civil Engineering Office (TBA FLV), Graubünden holidays (GRF) and the Office for Economic Affairs and Tourism (AWT) accompanies the implementation and ensures coordination with other activities.

The project applies the OKR methodology and organizes an annual Open Space, in order to achieve goals in a practical way and to enable everyone to actively participate.

Graubünden Bike sees itself as Space for the integrative design of active mobilityResponsibility and execution are shared among several people, not by a single central authority. This creates a dynamic network that acts quickly and effectively.

THE FUTURE VISION OF GRAUBÜNDEN BIKE

Graubünden Bike is guided by a vision of the future in which paths and living spaces are more closely intertwined. The focus is not only on recreational bike tourism, but also on the role of the bicycle as a practical, sustainable means of transport for everyone – regardless of their fitness level.

FROM SUCCESS TO NEW GOALS

To date, over 40 sub-projects have been initiated, many of which are already completed or nearing completion. Five selected projects exemplify the scope and impact:

FreiPass – Movement, Encounters and Enthusiasm:

Car-free Alpine passes for cyclists: Lukmanier (3,000 participants) and Splügen (7,000 participants) in the summer of 2025 thrilled the public and media. Disentis/Sedrun recorded 13 additional overnight stays. The next development phase begins in 2026.

Las Ciclistas – Community and Inspiration

Getting more women in Graubünden on bikes: that's the goal of the women's movement Las Ciclistas. The focus is on enjoyment, self-confidence, and community: from mountain bikes to everyday bicycles. Through meet-up events, rides, and networking, an environment is created where women can discover and develop their passion for cycling.

kulTOUR Graubünden – Cycling meets cultural content

The initiative makes culture accessible by bicycle. Particularly impressive: the sub-project was realized from conception to implementation in just nine months. This exemplifies how agile methodology and a participatory approach enable rapid, visible results.

Road maintenance courses – For those responsible for roads in Graubünden

Professional development and practical courses ensure the maintenance and safety of hiking and biking trails throughout the canton. The initiative supports sustainable infrastructure for long-term use.

In the current project phase, ongoing sub-projects are being further developed and completed. Additionally, communication of the project's motivation and the results achieved is being intensified to support integration with partners. This ensures that the initiated activities continue to have an impact beyond the project's duration.

The agile, participatory approach produces visible results for the region, which will strengthen Graubünden's attractiveness as a nature metropolis in the long term.
