The counting systems take alpine and urban monitoring to the next level

Do we actually know what is really going on on our trails, hiking or cycling routes? In order to take the right measures, it is crucial to have objective and well-founded facts as a basis. Good news: With Nomad Since August 2024, ALLEGRA has had a reliable partner and a tool at its side to professionalize frequency measurement to the maximum.

Who is behind Nomad and how is it counted?

The company Nomad from Ireland already has over 1,500 counters in operation. Customers - from municipalities to national parks - are enthusiastic: "The values are very reliable and are a valuable key tool for subsequently proving and justifying our financing with figures and as a basis for making new investments." The Nomad Counters work with PIR sensors, a passive infrared technology that is very battery-saving and precise. The sensor is embedded in either a wooden or plastic post. This allows unobtrusive integration into alpine or urban areas. If you want to distinguish between pedestrians, hikers and cyclists, there is an additional induction loop that is embedded in the ground. Road traffic can also be easily measured with another variant of the Nomad Counters. The evaluations can be accessed from anywhere and at any time via a cloud-based platform using a smartphone, tablet or PC - thanks to data transfer via NBioT.

What does Allegra Monitoring expert Benjamin Trotter say about the product?

For ALLEGRA, Nomad is clearly number one and we are very proud to partner with Allen McAdam and his team at Nomad Counters. Not only because the product is very cost-effective - the facts speak for themselves: quick installation, unobtrusive and space-saving counters, easy handling, with very accurate results! And the potential is huge. The NM52 allows us to identify hotspots, validate control concepts or develop future strategies. From experience, the perception of user conflicts is often subjective and based on subjective opinions. However, decisions on final measures must be based on facts. Especially when it comes to the coexistence of different user groups, this helps enormously in many areas.

Why MONITORING?

The highly developed counting systems of the Nomad Counters provide a very precise picture of the use of a trail and thus enable the provision of a user-friendly infrastructure. You learn to understand user groups and their behavior, can react to them and make recommendations for action. In the further development, hybrid frequency monitoring, ALLEGRA can use additional data from digital apps to make comprehensive, route-specific statements about the usage behavior of hikers and bikers in order to analyze the interaction of the various trails in the network.

Pump tracks, superblocks, bike paths: win-win even in urban areas

The measurements also extend far beyond mountain bike trails and hiking paths. The areas of application for the Nomad Counters are huge and are a powerful tool, especially for urban areas and metropolitan areas. In times of superblocks, transport transition and the promotion of physical activity, the counters are playing an increasingly important role. To give an example, by 2035 the distances and kilometers traveled by bike are to be doubled across Switzerland compared to 2021. With Nomad, ALLEGRA has a reliable tool at hand to evaluate the results with facts.
