The potential of the gravel bike

Gravel biking, i.e. conquering gravel roads, forest paths and natural trails by bike, is more than just a trend - it has huge potential, especially for rural and peripheral regions.

Gravel in Ruka-Kuusam

Why are gravel bikes so successful? Who are gravel bikers actually? And what are they looking for? These are the questions we ask ourselves about this topic and which have inspired us to look deeper into this topic.

The new attracts people…

...we've known that for a while. But what are the arguments for a gravel bike?

The versatility of the gravel bike is undoubtedly the main argument for the in-discipline of cycling: it can be used on the road, on gravel paths and on simple single trails, both in everyday life and in your free time, for short trips and multi-day bike tours. But if we really want to understand (I speak mainly for tourism professionals) what makes a person choose the gravel bike and seek out the corresponding experiences, we must understand the needs, emotions and expectations behind this choice.

By analyzing the gravel bike market segment, we have come to the conclusion that the general motivation for entering the gravel world is the need for adventure, discovery and freedom. This is despite the fact that needs, emotions and priorities are configured differently depending on the person. There is a lower willingness to take risks than in mountain biking, but at the same time there is a desire to leave one's comfort zone.

So we are looking at a very interesting clientele, but gravel paths along rivers alone are not enough for them. Would you like to know how you can make the most of your region's gravel potential?

Whether it's a hiking trail, bike trail, or shared trail: A functioning route requires more than construction – it requires maintenance.
