Project description:

In 2021, the ALLEGRA Team Austria carry out a feasibility study for the Wachau mountain bike region. The Wachau, with its Danube cycle path and its high-quality tourism infrastructure, already has many cyclists among its guests. Due to the increasing demand for MTB tours and routes away from the Danube cycle path and the growing local mountain bike scene, a feasibility study was carried out to analyze the region and its potential as an MTB destination. Several keynote speeches were held with 13 participating communities and their stakeholders to bring the topic closer to the participants and to address their wishes and fears. In the subsequent destination analysis, the community and its terrain were looked at and analyzed for strengths and opportunities. Based on the results and a target group definition, recommendations for action were drawn up to position the Wachau as an MTB destination based on its strengths, characteristics and competencies.

Between Maria Alm and Hinterthal: Seven kilometers of touring fun – two new trails – one destination

What do you do when a popular biking area borders sensitive refuges – and at the same time, two places need to be better connected for tourism? The answer: a carefully planned infrastructure that protects nature and facilitates recreation. Five years of work have created a 7.3 km mountain bike connection between Maria Alm and Hinterthal with approximately 300 meters of elevation gain, as well as two new single trails – well-thought-out, close to nature, and future-oriented.
